Working in the education industry can be the most rewarding and challenging at the same time. Apart from having the right qualifications for the job, you also need to be passionate about the job, have the ability to develop good relationships with students of different ages, parents, and colleagues, possess effective disciplinary and management skills and have a lot of warmth, patience and care.

What are the various opportunities in an education sector?

Teaching is not the only career opportunity in the industry. There are plenty of other jobs as well in education and care that are suitable for graduates as well as non-graduates. Primary or secondary school teaching, special education, administrative and management jobs, counselor, library assistant, childcare etc. are some of them. Since education sector is witnessing an exponential growth in our country with the rising awareness of child education, there is also a rising demand for qualified teaching personnel. With the competition getting tougher by the day, you will need to show off your qualifications with a strong professional resume.

How to format a professional resume

A resume is a document that includes the most relevant experience of the candidate matching the requirements of the job. Some important points to consider before you get started are

  1. Spell Check– When opting for a career in education, you are obviously expected to know how to spell. A small typo can come down heavily on you. Therefore, take the time to proof read your resume and cover letter. You may also ask a friend or two for feedback.
  2. Format– Make sure that your resume looks professional. You may refer to the many free templates available online to format your resume ideally.
  3. Keep it Short– A resume should ideally be no more than 2 pages. Hence only include things that are of importance and relevance in a precise and to the point.
  4. Be Simple and straight-forward– In many cases, those who are hiring you do not have the time to read through paragraphs of description. Hence, use bullet points to make it easier for them to read. Also, they need not be native English speakers. So your use of words should be carefully chosen in order to be clear, eloquent and easy to understand.

Writing a good resume

Now, let us discuss about how to start writing a good resume. In order to write a good resume, the first thing you have to consider is your audience. Who is going to read your resume? What are they looking for? Imagine yourself as the hiring manager and think who you would like as your ideal candidate. What are the qualities and qualifications you would like to see in a potential candidate? Crafting your resume by keeping this in mind will help you create that great resume your hiring person would wish to see.

Like a good education plan, your resume should also have clear points and should be structured in an easy to follow format. Keep what is most important for you and what you want to highlight to your hiring managers in the front-center.  The following are some of the critical elements recommended in a resume in their commonly preferred order:

  • Personal details like Full Name, Address, contact Information, date of Birth, Nationality
  • Career Objective
  • Education History
  • Relevant Coursework and Certifications
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • Other Experience (like tutoring, babysitting, coaching etc.)
  • Awards, Merits, Certifications
  • Hobbies and Interests

Career Objective

The Career Objective section is the opening statement of your resume. Many overlook the importance of this section. In fact, there are many times when hiring managers would receive teaching resumes with an objective to get a good job in IT or so.  However, this is a highly evaluated section which the hiring managers consider, to develop a preliminary judgement of your suitability to the job. Mention here your goals and interest in becoming a great teacher and how capable you are in contributing to the job and NOT what you want from the job.

Related Experience and Course Work

Being inexperienced, you could highlight any Education degree and/or classroom experience relevant to teaching to add to your potential. Do not hesitate to mention any other experiences or circumstances where you might have learned or exhibited the skills required as a teacher.  For instance, any experience with kids, tutoring in any subject, coaching or training in any skills, babysitting etc. are all experiences you could consider including in your resume.

Work Experience for Freshers

If you are an entry-level applicant, then you might have recently been through extensive training, including classroom experience through interactive field experience or as a trainee or inter. This experience can be included in your Professional Experience section.

Honors and Certifications

Certifications are of utmost importance when applying to educational position. Hence, it is important that you list all of your certifications received, or when you anticipate receiving them.
