Syllabus for National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Test

Creative Aptitude Test:

This category particularly focuses on one’s intuitional skills, innovation while developing a concept, power of observation and designing ability. The innovative use of color and illustrations play an important role in this category of the syllabus for NIFT entrance.

General Aptitude Test:

1) Quantitative Ability: This segment carries questions of addition, division, multiplication, fractions, distance, ratio and proportion, work and task, rate of interest and percentage.

2) Communication Ability: This segment aims to test the linguistic abilities of the candidates. It carries questions of correct spellings, idioms and phrases, one word substitutes, plural, singular, words with corresponding meanings, synonyms and antonyms.

3) English Comprehension: This segments aims at judging one’s comprehension of the English language. It carries questions to be solved after reading a passage.

4) Analytical Ability: This segments judges the candidate’s logical and inference ability through various questions.

5) General Knowledge and Current Affairs – this requires the candidate to be well versed with all the recent happenings and historical/societal facts and figures. This also deals with important dates and people.

6) Case Study: Here, a situation will be given in the question based on which the candidate is expected to answer. Through this segment they intend to test your managerial and decision making skills.

However it is mandatory to note that the weight-age and importance of all these segments vary as per the course you choose. Every course has a combination of all these in their entrance exams.

Bachelor of Design (B.Des):

Creative Aptitude Test (CAT) has 50 per cent weightage
General Aptitude Test (GAT) has 30 per cent weightage

Total Questions – 150 questions

Duration of the entrance exam – 2 hours.

The number of questions specific to all the segments are –

  • Quantitative Ability – 25 questions
  • Communication Ability – 35 questions
  • English Comprehension – 30 questions
  • Analytical Ability – 30 questions
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs – 30 questions

The case study segment has 25 questions and is a practical exam. It carries a weightage of 20 percent.

Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B. FTech):

Duration – 3 hours.

  • Quantitative Ability – 30 questions
  • Communication Ability and English Comprehension – 45 questions
  • Analytical Ability – 25 questions
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs – 25 questions
  • Case Study – 25 questions

Master of Design (M.Des):
Creative Aptitude Test (CAT) has 40 per cent weightage
General Aptitude Test (GAT) has 30 per cent weightage

Total Number of Questions – 150 questions

Duration of Exam – 2 hours.

  • Quantitative Ability – 25 questions
  • Communication Ability – 35 questions
  • English Comprehension – 30 questions
  • Analytical Ability – 30 questions
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs – 30 questions

GD/Personal Interview has 30 per cent weightage.

Master of Fashion Technology (M. FTech):
General Aptitude Test (GAT) has 70 per cent weightage

Total Number of Questions – 150 questions

Duration of Exam – 3 hours.

  • Quantitative Ability – 30 questions
  • Communication Ability & English Comprehension – 45 questions
  • Analytical Ability – 25 questions
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs – 25 questions
  • Case Study – 25 questions

Group Discussion/Personal Interview has 30 per cent weightage

Master of Fashion Management (M. F. M):
General Aptitude Test (GAT) has 70 per cent weightage.

Duration of Exam – 3 hours.

  • Quantitative Ability – 10 questions
  • Communication Ability and English Comprehension – 50 questions
  • Analytical Ability – 25 questions
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs – 25 questions

GD/Personal Interview has 30 per cent weightage.

NIFT Entrance Exam Preparation tips to get selected

  • Sketching is the most important skill for cracking NIFT entrance exam. You should have a habit of sketching almost anything and everything. This is one skill you must be the best at.
  • Read various newspapers, magazines, brochures and online portal. Be well updated about everything.
  • Pick ideas from here and there. Always be surrounded by good magazines, photographs, websites and catalogs.
  • Practice the art of sketching without the eraser. It only helps you save time in the NIFT entrance examination and also makes your lines grow confident and perfect.
  • Give importance to detailing where ever required, like the face of a human figure or the human’s outfits etc.
  • Try to master the skills of human illustration. Concentrate more in proportions, form etc.
  • Calligraphy skills come handy in posters, banner design, etc. Learn and practice different styles of lettering as they can come handy.
  • Be thorough with the syllabus. Have a clear picture of it in mind while giving the exams so you can attempt the questions accordingly.
  • While sketching you can also draw it with light lines at first and once it’s done you can darken it. This saves your time of erasing and also saves the drawing paper from creases.

In the Examination Hall:

  • Always remember to keep the best quality color pencils. The most economic option would be t use faber castle pencil with at least 24 different shades in it.
  • Planning is always the key to every big achievement. Please plan your design first and then head off to draw.
  • When preparing start with simplistic designs such as that of logos and t-shirt. The more complicated ones can be kept for later when you are a little thorough.
  • Time management is very important. The paper wouldn’t be as short as it may seem so plan out your time and start. It is good to be quick but don’t be in a haste.

The entrance test consists of two main components: Creative Aptitude Test and General Aptitude Test. The General Aptitude Test consists of objective type questions with one mark for every correct answer and negative marks of 0.25 for each incorrect answer. So be careful about what you are sure of what you are not. First attempt those which you are 100% sure about.
